Hello Pastoral Princess,

My wife is a stay at home mom as well, and that to me is so much more important that Home Schooling. We too live in a rural area with basically no children in our area for the kids to play with, so church would be the only place outside of school, except of course when we get to gether with friends. I believe that most children need that interaction and school is a great learning tool for their social life as well as their education.

Make it a GREAT day!

Home schooling is becoming more popular here in Southern Illinois, and the thought has crossed my mind, but my husband is opposed to the idea, mostly for social reasons. As a SAHM I feel like I already do home school our 2 and 4 year old on a daily basis, I think I could continue to do it...but then again we live in such a small rural community as it is, church and school are the ONLY times our kids would really see any other children unless we drove them several miles for play dates.

Marty,

I think that is AWESOME for your family. I am so glad that Home Shooling has had such a positive impact on your children.

I agree that the peer group socializing is sometimes negative, and this scares me to death as a parent. With as much encouragement as my wife and I can give, we encourage choosing the right freinds to hang out with. Our oldest child is about to turn 11, so this has not been a big issue yet....but it is coming I am sure.

The thing with Home Schooling in a small rural area is the lack of social activities in my opinion. I hear of groups of Home Shooler's getting together for activities, and I now hear that they have their own sports leagues. We do not have any of that around here that I am aware of, however Home Schooling is getting more and more common.

I really appreciate your input, and again I am so glad things have been working out good for you and your family.

Make it a GREAT day!

Hi Chad,

We have home schooled our children for 17 years now. We still have two teenagers at home, ages 13 and 16.

Our oldest is a senior at University of Arizona on a full ride academic scholarship, (National Merit Scholar), and our second will be starting college this fall. She says she will definitely teach her own children at home when she has some.

Home school isn't easy but done with diligence it can be the best thing for a family and for the children.

Socialization is what some people worry about, and I suppose it might be a problem if a family completely isolated themselves from society. But that isn't a healthy family anyway. My children have lots of friends and are involved in sports and other activities.

Peer group socialization is mostly a negative experience so that needs to be considered as well.

Alaska has LOTS of home schoolers. I estimated the amount of home schooled children in our school district and realized that we would need five new elementary schools if they all attended public school.
